“Brown Skin, Curly Hair, I Love Being Me” is written as a poem to uplift children’s self-esteem while experiencing the pressures of society’s idea of what beauty is or should be. This book was inspired by my niece, who has gracefully navigated through her grade school years embracing her culture while developing into a talented musician, athlete, and dancer.
The character is a Nigerian girl who expresses the love and pride she has for her rich African culture and the beauty that illuminates from her ancestors through her soul and spirit.
Her dad and grandma were born in Nigeria, giving her the best of both worlds of Nigerian and African-American culture through language and tradition. This enlightenment creates in her a sense of awareness and appreciation of her rich and diverse culture; realizing she can be what ever she dreams and believes.

As an advocate for diversity, equity, and inclusion in early childhood education, Paula is on a mission to sprinkle a little magic into the hearts of young readers everywhere.
With a passion for storytelling, Paula firmly believes that the key to a brighter tomorrow lies in the self-esteem and of young brown girls who are often subliminally told their natural looks are not socially accepted. Through her main character BG, and her adventurous tales, she invites children on thrilling adventures while being proud of and celebrating who they are.
